Mustang GT Cheap Horsepower: Stage-by-Stage Build Guide
The Coyote 5.0 rewards the oldest tricks in the book, and its mod path has a clear fork in it: squeeze the naturally aspirated setup, or bolt on a blower and double the power. Here are the three stages with real prices.
Stage 1: 450-500 whp NA, ~$2,100
The proven three-part combo: long-tube headers (~$629-$755 parts, ~$500 install), an E85 flex-fuel tune (~$400), and a cold air intake ($300-$400). Forum-documented builds hit ~500 whp with this setup on 2018+ cars. The E85 tune is the star of the show: the high-compression Coyote loves ethanol, and a flex tune lets the car run anything from pump gas to full E85 with the ECU adjusting automatically. Dyno testing shows headers alone worth 25 whp peak and 55 whp in the midrange.
Stage 2: 520-560 whp NA, ~$5,000-$7,000 total
Staying naturally aspirated past 500 whp means cams, an intake manifold upgrade, and every bolt-on maxed out. The gains per dollar fall off hard here, which is why most Coyote owners skip this stage entirely and go straight to boost. It exists for the NA purists and the racing classes that require it.
Stage 3: 810-855 hp supercharged, ~$12,000-$15,000 installed
The Whipple Gen 6 3.0L twin-screw kit is the definitive Coyote power adder. Stage 1 costs $9,600 and makes 810 hp / 640 lb-ft at the flywheel on 93 octane; Stage 2 costs $10,300 for 855 hp. Real-world dynos show ~796 whp with a smaller pulley. Best part: the kit is 50-state CARB legal, so it is the rare 800-hp mod that will not fail inspection. Add professional installation and supporting mods and you are at $12,000-$15,000 for a Mustang that runs with supercars.
Before you do it
Two practical notes. First, E85 availability varies: check that stations near you actually carry it before committing to a flex tune, or you will be running pump gas maps most of the time. Second, long-tube headers are not emissions legal in every state, so verify local rules before you buy. As with any mod, expect warranty scrutiny once you start changing the powertrain.
