Toyota GR Supra Cheap Horsepower: Stage-by-Stage Build Guide

The A90 Supra's B58 is the best dollars-per-horsepower engine on this site, and its mod path is beautifully linear. Here it is in three tiers: the $1,200 bolt-on car, the ethanol sweet spot, and the big-turbo build.

Stage 1: 400-430 whp, ~$1,000-$1,500

Downpipe plus tune, and not much else. A 4.5-inch stainless downpipe (VRSF, ~$400-$700 parts) is worth up to 100 whp and 89 lb-ft when tuned on pump gas. Pair it with a bootmod3 license (~$595): Stage 2 on 93 octane claims about 28% more power, and Stage 2 on an E30 blend claims up to 34%. One note for 2020 cars: late software may need a bench unlock before OBD flashing works, but US shops like Kies Motorsports now do B58 unlocks in-house for about $250. That is roughly $12-$15 per wheel horsepower, the cheapest on this site.

Stage 2: 450-500 whp, ~$2,500-$4,000 total

The daily-driver sweet spot. Add the TU high-pressure fuel pump, an intake, a gearbox tune, and an E30-E50 ethanol blend. Tuner stage guides put this combo at roughly 480 hp at the crank with stock-like drivability and manners. Budget about $1,500-$2,500 on top of Stage 1. This is where most Supra owners stop, because the car is genuinely fast and still starts every morning.

Stage 3: 550-700+ whp, $8,000-$15,000+

Hybrid or full big turbo, port injection or methanol, upgraded cooling, and the fuel system to feed it all. Know the ceiling: the B58's 8-speed starts giving up around 650 lb-ft of torque, so torque management or a built transmission becomes part of the plan. This is where the Supra goes from fast street car to genuinely exotic-hunting, at roughly the price of a used Miata.

Before you do it

The B58 has a strong reputation for reliability when tuned sensibly: change oil every 5,000 miles, run good fuel, and watch intake temperatures. As always, tuning can affect your powertrain warranty, and catless downpipes are off-road parts that will not pass emissions testing. The catted high-flow option keeps you street legal in most states with nearly all of the gains.
